After the flood: locusts throw farmers into distress

After the flood, millions of locusts are now infesting the pasture land in Queensland, Australia. This is a disaster for the farmers.

After the flood, millions of locusts are now swarming over the grazing land in Queensland, Australia, posing the next catastrophe for farmers.

In Queensland, Australia, locusts have destroyed over 3,200 hectares of lush grazing land that was previously spared from the recent floods. Farmer Leticia Donaldson from Alpha is also affected. She reports on ABC News about kilometer-long swarms of millions of locusts that have devoured the buffalo grass. The consequences are so severe that she felt compelled to sell some of her cattle early.

Locust control is hardly possible. Leticia Donaldson has invested 50,000 Australian dollars (approximately 28,300 euros) in spraying operations with a helicopter - unfortunately, without much success. Unfavorable weather caused delays, and the action was largely ineffective. Additionally, the Australian Plague Locust Commission warns of a possible locust plague in the summer if the current favorable conditions for their reproduction persist. The insects could produce several generations within a few months and rapidly develop into large swarms.
