The Bayer corporation is reorganizing its crop protection business in Germany.
The Bayer Group is restructuring its crop protection division in Germany. This affects the Crop Science division, which is responsible for the production, research, and development of crop protection products.
This is a necessary step to ensure the global competitiveness of the division, according to Frank Terhorst, Head of Strategy and Sustainability for the Crop Science division. In recent years, certain Asian manufacturers of generic products have built up significant overcapacities. They are entering the market with very low prices, sometimes below the production costs of crop protection products in Europe. This situation is exacerbated by increasing regulatory restrictions and national export barriers.
Therefore, Bayer will focus even more on strategic, innovative technologies and products that differentiate the company from its competitors in the future. As a result, the Frankfurt/Main site will not continue after 2028, but will be sold or relocated. Research and development (R&D) will be consolidated in Monheim, while production in Dormagen will become more streamlined and future-proof.
In Frankfurt, there are currently production capacities and R&D for herbicides. Around 500 employees are affected, although not all jobs will be lost without replacement: a buyer is being sought for parts of the production.
In Dormagen, the production site with the largest portfolio of active ingredients and crop protection products will remain. It will be made more future-proof by aligning capacities towards innovative and strategic products. Bayer will discontinue the production of generic crop protection active ingredients, as well as the associated formulations. These changes are planned to be implemented gradually by the end of 2028. Based on current plans, around 200 more jobs will be affected by the restructuring. Currently, nearly 1,200 employees work in Dormagen. However, the restructuring aims to ensure that the site continues to play a role in Bayer's global production. Socially acceptable solutions are being worked on with employee representatives for the affected colleagues.
The decisions are based on a five-year plan for the agricultural division that Bayer CropScience presented in March.
