Australia ranks first in terms of the size of organic areas in hectares. However, when considering the organic share of the total agricultural land, Liechtenstein takes the top spot.

More than half of the globally organically managed area is located in Australia. With an organic area of 53 million hectares, which consists almost exclusively of extensive pasture, Australia stands as the clear leader. European countries do not appear in the top 5 of this ranking, as reported by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE).

Looking at the organic share of the agricultural land overall, rather than the absolute organic areas, paints a different picture. Of the ten countries that proportionally farm the most of their agricultural land organically worldwide, eight are in Europe. Liechtenstein leads with an organic share of 44.6%, while Australia ranks 14th.

For comparison, Germany has the tenth-largest organic area worldwide with 1.89 million hectares, with an organic share of 11.4%, placing it 20th internationally.
