The final treatment in rye should be flexible depending on pre-treatments and current disease pressure.
Rye is currently between growth stages EC 51 and 59. Rye crops also exhibit good leaf health this year due to low infection weather in March and the first half of April. Some brown rust can be observed, more prominently depending on the susceptibility of the variety.
Aside from certain regions in the north and northeast of Germany, brown rust infection conditions have been favorable since the middle of last week (refer to the ProPlant map). Following the dry weeks in March, the disease is now slowly gaining momentum. Monitor your crops - fungicide use should be limited to essentials and tailored to the situation in the field.
Our recommended approach
If there is no fungicide protection left and a critical infestation occurs simultaneously with fungus-promoting weather conditions (warmer days (20 - 26°C) and cool nights (15°C) with dew formation or light rainfall), a curative, timely (intermediate) treatment is advisable.
In case of low initial infestation of brown rust, a combination of 0.8 l/ha Orius + 0.8 l/ha Azbany (or equivalent) is possible. If there is infestation on upper leaves, or simultaneous infestation with mildew, a mixture of 1 - 1.5 l/ha Pronto Plus + 0.5 - 0.8 l/ha Azbany is more suitable. This is followed by the final treatment.
In many crops, flowering will be reached in a few days. If brown rust has not been a concern so far, the final treatment can be postponed until just before flowering (EC 61) (often around the second half of May), based on rainfall.
Last treatment was a while ago? Then finalize now
Where the last fungicide application was over two weeks ago, the fungicidal protection against brown rust has expired - in this case, the final treatment can be easily brought forward and applied now. To ensure the effectiveness of Elatus Era, do not use the product alone.
Possible combinations include, for example, 0.75 - 1.0 l/ha Elatus Era + 0.75 l/ha Tomec or 0.75 l/ha Elatus Era + 0.75 l/ha Azbany (or another Azoxystrobin, at least 125 g/ha). Also suitable are, for instance, 0.8 - 1.25 l/ha Priaxor + 0.75 l/ha Pronto Plus (with a 15m water distance) or + 150 g/ha Prothioconazole, or alternatively 1.0 l/ha Skyway Xpro (possibly + 0.75 l/ha Azbany or another Azoxystrobin).
