Grain: The second shortening is imminent

With the Grannenspitzen, you should complete the growth regulator measures in winter barley. The wheat will also reach the deadline for the second trimming in the next few days.

Finishing Growth Regulator Measures in Winter Barley

With the awn tips, you should finish the growth regulator measures in winter barley. In the next few days, wheat will also reach the deadline for the second shortening.

Winter Barley Development

In warm regions of Germany such as the Rhineland and Lower Rhine, winter barley is slowly reaching the awn stage. In the rest of Germany, the crops have made a visible development leap with milder nights and precipitation. First crops are pushing out the last leaf.

Application of Growth Regulators

From the flag leaf stage onwards, the active ingredient Ethephon has proven to be effective. Until EC 49 (awn tips), a second measure is built on the first shortening. After nationwide variable April weather with rain, there are good application conditions for the active ingredient over the weekend with predominantly dry weather (widely >15°C). Sunny conditions are expected to provide good effects, so lower application rates are recommended even after higher rainfall. Depending on the effectiveness of the previous application, crop density, and variety stability, it is recommended to use 0.3 – 0.5 l/ha Cerone 660 or Camposan Top. For late sowings and higher altitudes reaching EC 32/33, the use of 0.3 – 0.6 l/ha Moddus, Calma, etc. or 0.3 – 0.6 kg/ha Prodax is advised.

Delayed Growth Regulator Measures

Where measures have been delayed due to dryness, the first shortening is still pending in some cases. From EC 33 onwards up to EC 37, the use of, for example, 0.5 – 0.8 Medax Top + 0.5 – 0.8 kg/ha Turbo has proven effective for a late first shortening.

Second Growth Regulator Application in Wheat

The second growth regulator application can now also take place in wheat.

Winter Wheat Shortening

In winter wheat, it is important to timely follow up on the previous application. With at least a 10-day interval, medium-strength and lodging-susceptible varieties on better soils should be shortened after the end of showers. Options include 0.2 – 0.5 l/ha CCC 720, for higher lodging susceptibility 0.3 – 0.4 l/ha CCC 720 + 0.1 – 0.25 l/ha Trinexapac product. CCC 720/Stabilan 720 are approved until EC 31. Shortcut XXL/Palermo 720/Regulator 720 as well as Stefes CCC 720 are approved until EC 32.

Second Shortening in Winter Wheat

After a later first shortening, for example, in EC 31/32, a second shortening via Medax Top + Turbo with 0.3 – 0.5 l/ha + 0.3 – 0.5 kg/ha in EC 33 to 37 is recommended. Varieties like Elixer or Willem followed by Asory, Debian, Keitum, and Optimist are particularly susceptible to lodging. Varieties like Campesino, Champion, Donovan, Reform, Kreuzer, Spectral, and Willcox are considered medium-strength. Varieties like Chevignon, Spontan, and Magnetron, especially Winner, Informer, and Rubisko are stable. In thin crops with very stable varieties, a second shortening can be omitted, especially on lighter soils. The same applies to Triticale – also consider the variety-specific stability here.
