Grain aphids and their larvae can now be found in many crops. Control measures should only be carried out when the damage threshold is exceeded for resistance reasons.
The main damage is caused by the larvae of the grain aphid. These are black and shiny due to a slimy excrement covering. Feeding on the leaf blades results in a striped window feeding pattern - especially on the flag leaf, this can lead to yield losses. They most commonly infest wheat, oats, and summer barley.
Field-specific controls are necessary.
Recommendation: Only insecticides from the pyrethroid group (indication: grain aphids or biting insects) are approved for grain aphids. For example, Karate Zeon with 75 ml/ha is recommended. However, only treat if the control value of 1 larva per flag leaf in growth stage EC 39 - 59 (flag leaf fully developed to end of ear/spike emergence) has been exceeded. The infestation situation can vary greatly from field to field. Therefore, field-specific infestation controls are necessary. Aphids have been scarce so far, so no control measures are needed.
Consider bee protection!
In crops where flowering weeds are present, you must adhere to the pesticide regulations to protect bees. Tank mixtures of bee-safe (B4) insecticides with fungicides or growth regulators can be more bee-hazardous (B2 or B1) than applications in solo use. Therefore, do not mix any combinations that have not been checked for bee protection.
