Kuhn introduces a new mower that simultaneously mows and swathes. Instead of conveyor belts, screws bring the harvested material together. The idea is not new, but it is now part of Kuhn's lineup.
Kuhn is well-known for its grassland technology. The agricultural machinery manufacturer from Alsace surprises with a new butterfly mower. The new Kuhn GMD 9530 RV operates using a method that is found in competitors' products but has never been seen in Kuhn mowers before. Kuhn GMD 9530 RV: First screw mower introduced
Following Pöttinger, Krone, and Claas, Kuhn also launches a butterfly mower with screws. Cross-conveying screws bring the fodder together immediately after mowing to form a swath. This has advantages: the closed construction prevents fodder losses. Additionally, swath merging is possible without a conditioner. In general, screw mowers are considered lighter and simpler in design.
Butterfly mower with a 9.50 m working width
The Kuhn GMD 9530 RV operates on a width of 9.10 to 9.50 m. The mowing bars are variable in position and working width via a joint. Therefore, the swath width of the Kuhn mower is adjustable from 1.50 to 2.00 m. If the driver does not want to merge the fodder with the screws but wants to lay it wide to dry faster, hydraulic hoods can be opened to bypass the screws. The fodder then remains after the cutting discs and does not take the detour via the conveying screws. Additionally, it is possible to lay a swath on one or both sides. Drive shafts drive the mowing bars via a separate gearbox. A cam shut-off clutch and shear bolts protect them from overload. Kuhn uses wear-resistant Hardox steel for the screws' windings and other wear parts. According to Kuhn, the GMD 9530 RV fits ideally on 200-HP tractors.
Extreme use: Screw mower mows GPS
Kuhn released a short video on Youtube showing the mower in action in whole-plant silage and writes: Our new GMD 9530 RV is not afraid to tackle challenging harvests. The mower was already seen in action at the French grassland field day Salon de l'herbe et des fourrages at the end of May. Kuhn did not provide any information on when the mower will be available in Germany.
