JCB hydrogen engine now approved throughout the EU

The hydrogen engine from JCB is now approved for sale and use in machines and OEM products from third-party providers in all 27 member states of the European Union.

JCB's hydrogen engines have achieved another milestone: they have now received the first full EU type approval for use in mobile work machines.

This approval means that JCB's hydrogen engine is approved for sale and use in machines and OEM products from third-party providers in all 27 member states of the European Union.

Contrary to the belief that hydrogen technology is obsolete,

"This is another significant moment for JCB's hydrogen program. Not long ago, some saw the end of the combustion engine in Europe," said Anthony Bamford, Chairman of JCB and head of the company's hydrogen engine project.

"JCB's full EU type approval is clear evidence that the combustion engine actually has a promising future on the path to a net-zero world when hydrogen, a CO2-free fuel, is used instead of fossil fuels."

In Germany, it is already approved.

The EU type approval follows earlier approvals by authorities in nine continental European countries, allowing the engine to be commercially used in machines under the regulations for "new technologies" in these countries.

"I am thrilled for the JCB team that has put in so much work to bring us to this point. Now, our focus is on bringing our hydrogen technology to the market," said Bamford.

JCB has already produced over 130 test engines powering backhoe loaders, telescopic handlers, and power generators. The practical tests of JCB's hydrogen equipment before market launch are well advanced and progressing smoothly.
