Netherlands: 1,000 hectares of agricultural land for the military.

Due to the global security situation, the Dutch Ministry of Defense wants to use 1,000 hectares of agricultural land for military purposes. The Farmers' Association warns of threats to their livelihoods, but shows understanding.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense plans to utilize around 1,000 hectares of agricultural land for military purposes. State Secretary Gijs Pepijn Tuinman cited the heightened global security situation and the scarcity of land as reasons for this decision. Tuinman acknowledged that these plans will have noticeable consequences for citizens and businesses. "I have sat at kitchen tables, stood in business halls, and walked through fields," he said. He takes the concerns of the people seriously and emphasizes the importance of quick and clear communication. Affected individuals and the public have until July 9, 2025, to submit their comments to the Ministry of Defense. The Farmers' Association LTO Noord foresees many farms in its region being affected. They anticipate significant repercussions for many farmers, gardeners, and their families. The association has pledged support for those impacted. At the same time, LTO Noord understands the military's need but stresses the significance of agriculture for food security. According to their own statements, the association was able to persuade the Ministry to retract previous, more extensive plans.
