The Italian police have arrested 11 farmers and animal breeders. They are suspected of having looted millions in an armed attack on two cash transporters.
According to the Italian police force, the Arma dei Carabinieri, in late March, 11 suspects were arrested following an attack on two cash transporters. The individuals involved are believed to be farmers and animal breeders. As part of the operation "Drago," officers from Livorno carried out the preliminary arrests. These eleven individuals are accused of multiple serious crimes, including armed robbery, possession and carrying of various military weapons, explosives, and firearms in a public place, as well as multiple counts of grand theft and fencing.
The starting point was the violent attack on two cash transporters on March 28, 2025, on a highway in the municipality of San Vincenzo in Tuscany. One of the vehicles was blown up. The perpetrators were described as an armed group of masked individuals with a Sardinian accent. After the robbery, the criminals fled in two cars that had been reported stolen in 2024. They also stole another vehicle, along with the security personnel's weapons. All three vehicles were later found in remote areas near Pisa, according to the police.
The investigations led to the suspects, who are Italians between 33 and 54 years old from the province of Nuoro - a remote mountainous region on the island of Sardinia. These men are primarily involved in livestock farming and direct cultivation. According to the Carabinieri, they are specialized in robberies and the use of weapons, including military ones, as a sort of "side job." They spent months preparing, creating alibis, and finding suitable vehicles. On Monday, a major raid with over 300 police officers took place in Sardinia, Pisa, and Bologna. The public prosecutor's office requested arrest warrants for offenses such as armed robbery, illegal possession of weapons and explosives, theft, and fencing.
