High numbers of African Swine Fever outbreaks in Poland

Most cases of African Swine Fever in wild boars are found in Poland. However, the situation is also concerning in Romania, where the number of cases among domestic pigs has increased.

Wild boars in Poland have recorded the most cases of African swine fever (ASF). The situation is also concerning in Romania, where the number of cases among domestic pigs has increased.

In 2025, African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread, particularly in Eastern European countries. The majority of cases reported in Europe by early June have been found in wild boars in Poland. Controlling the disease remains a significant challenge, especially in regions with a high wild boar population.

The situation in Romania is worrying, with an increase in cases among domestic pigs as well. Romania has both large commercial farms and many small, traditional backyard holdings. Larger farms are often better equipped to implement strict biosecurity measures, while smaller farms are more vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

In Germany, ASF remains a serious problem. Since the first detection in wild boars in Brandenburg in September 2020, the disease has continued to spread. From the beginning of the year until early June, 1,505 outbreaks have been confirmed in wild boars.

Pig farmers are urged to adhere to all necessary biosecurity measures. ASF is a highly contagious viral infection that is almost always fatal in both domestic and wild pigs. However, the disease is not harmful to humans.
