Brazil is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of poultry meat. Recently, an outbreak of bird flu has occurred in a commercial poultry farm, resulting in devastating consequences.
In mid-May, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu (H5N1) in a commercial poultry farm. This is the first case in a commercial operation in Brazil, as the virus had only been detected in wild birds before.
The affected farm is located in Montenegro, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This state plays a significant role in Brazil's poultry exports, housing large breeding and processing facilities. It is close to the port of Rio Grande, a key center for exporting poultry products to China, the EU, and other countries worldwide.
China has temporarily suspended the import of Brazilian poultry meat for 60 days, according to Brazil's Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro. The EU has also imposed a comprehensive import ban on poultry due to the lack of a regionalization agreement. Without such an agreement, Brazil cannot issue health certificates for specific regions. Therefore, the import ban applies to the entire Brazilian territory, regardless of the localized nature of the outbreak. The ban includes live poultry and all poultry products.
