The Ukrainian company Oliyar has announced the construction of a large farm for 2.3 million laying hens in the Lviv region. The facility, located just 80 kilometers from the Polish border, is expected to produce around 1.6 million eggs daily. This was reported by the Polish news channel Radio Pin. The planned farm will consist of 20 state-of-the-art, automated chicken coops stocked with Hy-Line Brown laying hens. Oliyar is primarily known as a manufacturer and exporter of sunflower, rapeseed, and soybean oil, supplying globally, including to the EU, the USA, and Africa.

Competition pressure on Poland: Egg exports through Ukrainian mega farm

According to a report by Radio Pin, the project could significantly intensify competition in the egg market in Eastern Europe. This could pose economic challenges, especially for Polish producers. Ukraine aims for long-term expansion of egg production. Despite the ongoing war, the Kiev School of Economics predicts an increase in Ukrainian egg production. The production volume is expected to rise to 855,000 tons by 2033 - a 31% increase compared to 2023.

Polish egg market currently strong

In 2023, Polish farms held around 54 million laying hens, laying approximately 11 billion eggs, according to the Otwarte Klatki association. This represents a slight increase in production compared to the previous year, driven by higher domestic demand. The average per capita consumption in Poland is expected to increase by 27% in 2024, reaching 179 eggs. Poland is a significant egg exporter in the EU. In terms of egg production, Poland ranks fifth in the EU. About 40% of the egg production is exported, with main buyers being Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Last year, according to Otwarte Klatki, Poland generated €471 million in revenue from egg exports, making it the second largest egg exporter in the EU after the Netherlands.
