BayWa r.e. has sold its largest battery storage project in Europe. The facility with 300 MW capacity is located in the Netherlands. The further development will now be taken over by Vopak.

BayWa r.e. and its Dutch subsidiary GroenLeven have sold a large-scale battery storage project in the northern part of the Netherlands to the independent tank storage company Vopak. It is BayWa r.e.'s largest battery storage project in Europe and includes a 300 MW grid connection along with all necessary permits and secured land.

The project has been successfully developed by GroenLeven up to the construction phase and will be connected to the TenneT high-voltage transmission grid. Vopak will take over the further development and implement a large-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) that contributes to the flexibility and reliability of the Dutch energy system.

The previous owners are highlighting their expertise through this deal. GroenLeven emphasizes its "leading role in the development of battery storage projects in Europe," while BayWa r.e. mentions its "know-how in providing innovative and versatile solutions." They are proud of developing the largest European storage project to date.

BayWa r.e. states that the sale strengthens its position in the European energy storage market. The acquired knowledge and experience will be used to develop future projects in the Netherlands and other markets.

Battery storage solutions are essential for integrating renewable energies and play a central role in the energy transition. One of the many grid-supporting applications is the temporary storage of solar and wind energy. This allows for energy to be injected into the grid at an optimal time and helps balance fluctuations in supply and demand. This, in turn, can increase the share of renewable energies in the system.
