One and a half years ago, a farmer opened with great confidence the largest insect farm in Northern Europe. Now, Enorm Biofactory is undergoing a restructuring process and seeking new investors.
When Enorm Biofactory opened in Hvirring, Denmark at the end of 2023, it was considered a flagship project for the breeding and propagation of the Black Soldier Fly.
However, in late April 2025, the company filed for a restructuring process in court. In addition to high investments, sales figures have recently plummeted.
According to sources close to the company, the Danish Agricultural Society (DLG), one of the main owners of the insect farm, has exited. "We have explored several options with consultants to keep the operation running, but unfortunately, none has proven viable," a DLG spokesperson quoted by agtechnavigator.com.
Now, Enorm Biofactory is looking for new investors, reevaluating its business model, and aiming to reposition itself in response to changing market conditions. The farm aims to enable the resumption of operations, which are currently running at a reduced capacity.
Large Investments and Visions
The flagship project started on a large scale: over 22,000 m² of operating space and over €100 million in investments were intended to ensure high-quality protein meal and oil. The Danish agricultural giant DLG was a co-owner, and significant parts of the barn technology were provided by the Big Dutchman corporation.
However, the commissioning was delayed due to lengthy approval processes, protracted construction of the facility, and operational difficulties. This led to insufficient production and uncertainty in selling the high-priced products. The factory could not cover the large investments under the current market conditions.
Sales crisis leads to a dead end
"We had a strong interest and premium price potential until the end of 2024. But as we approached full operational readiness, market dynamics significantly declined," quoted Jane Lind Sam, COO of Enorm, by agtechnavigator.com.
Dismissals have been necessary, but a small core team is in place to facilitate a rapid resumption of operations.
This marks the lowest point in the developments so far. By the end of March, the factory was already in the media spotlight as residents had complained about odor nuisance. Odor measurements exceeded the permitted limits by eleven times.
