In road freight transport, a shift is occurring, where electric trucks are playing an increasingly significant role. A study reveals the conditions under which electric trucks can be economically superior.
During transport logistic 2025, the digital road freight forwarder sennder presented the results of a new study. This study examines the circumstances in which heavy-duty electric trucks outperform and are more cost-effective than diesel-powered ones.
The study is based on over 1.3 million cost scenarios, derived from the actual operation of vehicles across Europe. Providing a detailed insight, the study analyzes the impacts of various factors on fleet operating costs throughout Europe, such as changing toll structures and CO2 pricing mechanisms.
The Results
The analysis indicates that many major European markets are on track to achieve cost parity between electric and diesel by 2030, with potential savings in some cases. This study guides transport companies on how they need to strategically adjust their supply chains and networks to be counted among the winners of this transformation. It also paints a clear picture of the transport industry's overall cost dependence on electricity prices.
Competitiveness strongly depends on the location.
"The results revealed some interesting and novel insights, especially concerning the German market. In our 2025 scenarios, Germany is the only major European market where electric trucks are already economically competitive," said Christoffer Haldemar, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at sennder.
Graham Major-Ex, Senior Director of Green Business and eMobility at sennder, added: "Electric drives will be the future of heavy-duty trucks. Not only because they will be mandatory, but also because they are economically superior. In fact, while policy incentives can accelerate the transition, they are not a necessity. Progress in energy storage and more affordable batteries are the main factors speeding up this transformation. This will significantly increase the economic viability of electric trucks on average."
